A tall perennial, the parent plant of numerous hybrids. Has thick leaves with deep longitudinal grooves. Bears thick spikes with tubular scarlet flowers which turn orange/yellow as they bloom. Striking in groups, but also beautiful as a solitary plant. Sow in the garden in a seedbed. After sufficient growth prick out and transplant. Flowers are produced the subsequent year.
